Experts define it as a condition of the reproductive system in which you are not being able to conceive even after one year of unprotected and well-timed intercourse, or the women who get pregnant but suffer multiple miscarriages despite below 35 years of age. If you are above 35 years of age, infertility is considered after 6 months of well-timed and unprotected intercourse.
How common is infertility?
Infertility is a worldwide problem. Surprisingly 1 out of 6 couples worldwide face problem in conceiving during their first 12 months of trying. It is recommended that after 12 months of trying to get pregnant you must seek medical consultation. Infertility is more common in older women (above 35 years of age), as the rate of fertility fall sharply past the age of 35.
What are the types?
The type of infertility is basically classified as Primary infertility and Secondary infertility.
Primary infertility refers to the condition in which they fail to conceive instead of at least one year of unprotected intercourse.
Secondary infertility on the other hand, is described as the condition when couples after having their first baby could not able to become pregnant again.
How successful is the treatment options?
It depends on many factors such as age of the partner, fertility clinic, type of ART, fresh eggs or frozen eggs, fresh embryo of frozen embryo, cause of infertility etc. The treatment is quite successful unless you are not suffering through the worsened situation or passed age situation. However the treatment is available for countering such problem as well.
Is infertility just a women problem?
Not at all, both male and female could be responsible for infertility. In 35% of cases, it is because of female factor and another 35% of cases belong to female factors. The rest of the reasons occur by the mixture of both male and female factors or by unknown factors. Thus, the factors that are responsible for infertility are almost equally distributed between them.
How long should we try before we consult the doctor?
Generally, it is quoted that if you are below the age of 35 years and have more than one year of unsuccessful trying to conceive, doctors consultation is imperative. In case your age is well above 35 years, you should take the appointment with the doctor right after six months of trying, as any further delay will only reduce your chances to become pregnant drastically.
What are the factors that increase the risk of infertility in men?
Most of the factors are related to our health and lifestyle habit. The numbers of factors that reduce the quality and quantity of sperm comprise:
Taking drugs and alcohol regularly
Having radiation treatment or chemotherapy for cancer
Exposure to environmental toxin including pesticides and lead
In addition age, medicine, over weight and underweight also could lead to low sperm count that causes infertility in men.
What are the problems that cause infertility in women?
In most of the cases poor ovulation or no ovulation is the prime cause of infertility in women. Without ovulation there will be no eggs and no eggs means no fertilization. Irregular or absence of menstrual periods leads to the problem of ovulation. Some other problems that include are endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, blocked fallopian tube, uterine fibroids, PCOS, overweight or underweight etc.
What are the signs and symptoms of infertility?
Understanding the signs and symptoms of infertility are quite relevant. However, sometime there are no prominent sign and symptom associated with infertility problem. Thus, listening to your body and performing regular check up is quite essential to detect the problem. Early or on time detection is always helpful in successful treatment of infertility problem and achieving pregnancy easily later on.
How important it is to get the menstrual period right?
Getting your menstrual cycle regular is significantly necessary. It is a good sign that you are ovulating well which is very critical for becoming pregnant. Generally a cycle that occurs in between 24-36 days is considered regular. Any upheaval in your menstrual cycle does not mean that you are not ovulating or infertile. It is just a sign to get things right to avoid any further complications.
